Obsidian

Obsidian, a volcanic glass is stark black in color and stands out against the brown western soil. Our little valley was once a yearly meeting place for over 2,000 Indians. Some wintered here, surviving on the salmon that used to make their way up the Little Weiser River. The salmon are gone from the little river but the rock the Shoshoni once used to make their arrows still dots our landscape. That is until they are collected by the hands of little children to add to their collections.

Size: 40” x 29”

What we love about it: The grey is almost black it’s so dark.

Wool: Short shearling Gotland wool. (Shearling rugs have characteristic shear marks from the blade of the shears due to the sheep being trimmed within a few months of harvesting. The wool is usually around ½ an inch long. Soft

Origin: Born & lovingly raised here at Living Sky Farm

THE PROCESS

These beautiful hides are tanned on our family farm in Indian Valley Idaho. The process is gentle and certified organic in England.

Why is there hay in my rug!!? In the sheep world it’s called “VM” or “vegetable matter”. The friendly process of taking each hide from the salted stage to a preserved rug leaves all the unique qualities of the animal intact. Bits of hay and seeds are a part of raising sheep. The most beautiful things in life aren’t always perfect. While we do our best to remove the big bits, removing it all would mean a completely different process that destroys what makes each hide unique.

THE SOURCE

Heritage hides are from sheep born here on the farm. Their original purpose is to supply our family and customers with meat. The moment lambs touch the ground they are cared for and shepherded in the most natural way possible.
