Gandalf the Ram

This was our herd sire all the way from a farm in Montana. He was the foundation of creating the Gotland breed of sheep here in America. Gandalf produced the most beautiful lambs. However he had one problem, he enjoyed a good wrestle with both two and four legged creatures. It didn’t matter if the two-legged creature was a small child wandering into the field.

In spite of his less desirable qualities Gandalf was a looker. His massive hide and beautiful wool will bring warmth to someone’s home for years to come. I can’t think of a better way to honor the big guy.

Size: 41” x 28” quite large!

What we love about it: These hides do not come along very often. We have only a few rams each year on our farm, and many stay with us into old age. It’s not often we offer their hides for sale. This hide is extra thick due to the animals age. it would make a beautiful rug for a low traffic floor or on a decorative chair.

Wool: Gotland, 3-4” length, Soft but not baby soft due to the testosterone from intact rams.

Origin: Born in Montana & spent his days breeding ewes here at Living Sky Farm.

THE PROCESS

These beautiful hides are tanned on our family farm in Indian Valley Idaho. The process is gentle and certified organic in England.

Why is there hay in my rug!!? In the sheep world it’s called “VM” or “vegetable matter”. The friendly process of taking each hide from the salted stage to a preserved rug leaves all the unique qualities of the animal intact. Bits of hay and seeds are a part of raising sheep. The most beautiful things in life aren’t always perfect. While we do our best to remove the big bits, removing it all would mean a completely different process that destroys what makes each hide unique.

THE SOURCE

Heritage hides are from sheep born here on the farm. Their original purpose is to supply our family and customers with meat. The moment lambs touch the ground they are cared for and shepherded in the most natural way possible.
